RV Bucket List: The Best Spring Road Trip Destinations

RV Bucket List: The Best Spring Road Trip Destinations

Hitting the road in your RV is an excellent way to make the most of spring. But with such a variety of exciting routes and destinations to choose from, it can be challenging to pick the best one to kick things off for the season. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite road trip destinations for spring to help you figure it out.

#1. Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway is first up on the list of best spring road trip destinations. Teeming with the breathtaking ridges, gaps, and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains, this particular route is easily one of the most scenic. This 469-mile stretch of road spans across the mountain ranges of Virginia and North Carolina. So you’ll happen upon incredible sights like Mount Mitchell—the highest peak east of the Mississippi.

Your journey down Blue Ridge Parkway might also take you to places like the New River, which is the oldest river in North America. Not to mention, it’s home to Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. Thus, Blue Ridge Parkway can’t be beaten—especially if you’re looking for an idyllic road trip through the mountains.

#2. Going to the Sun Road

Glacier National Park’s Going to the Sun Road is another excellent route for RV road-trippers looking to get their fill of nature’s incredible beauty. Moreover, its 50 miles of unbelievable alpine meadows, towering peaks, and astonishing wildlife sightings make it the perfect roadway for any RVer looking to soak in some of Mother Nature’s best work.

If rolling meadows and picturesque peaks aren’t enticing enough, this stretch of road can also gift you a front-row seat to two of the nation’s most idyllic high-elevation lakeshores. Of course, the road won’t be completely free of snow and freezing temperatures until June.

This is why you should double-check that your RV holding tank heaters and other accessories are functioning correctly before you journey down this route. Trust us, it’s worth being able to navigate this gorgeous landscape safely so that you can enjoy it fully. In short, Going to the Sun Road is a must for any springtime RV adventurer.

#3. The Grand Circle

This next scenic route might just take the cake, as it boasts a 1,500-mile loop through the deserts of five different states. And the natural treasures you’ll roll through on your trip around The Grand Circle are among the most highly-regarded. The following are just a few of the natural sights you’ll get to witness on this route:

  • Bryce Canyon

  • Zion

  • Capitol Reef

  • Canyonlands

  • The Grand Canyon

If you choose The Grand Circle for your RV road-tripping adventures, be sure to allot at least eleven days to cover it all. Most folks start their trip in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, or Phoenix, then work their way around the rest of the loop. Regardless of how you choose to do it, The Grand Circle is one road trip that’s pretty hard to match.

#4. Cherohala Skyway

For RVers seeking a genuinely magical on-the-road experience, Cherohala Skyway should be an absolute must on your destination itinerary. This is especially true for those looking to venture out to this spot in the spring.

Indeed, with the light blushing of mountain laurel and blooming rhododendron tinting everything on the skyway with an otherworldly aura, its springtime views are difficult to surpass. Plus, this 41-mile road stretches from North Carolina all the way to Tennessee.

So if you have plans to stop and camp, you’ll be able to once you hit Robbinsville’s Lake Santeetlah. Once there, you can also hike and bike the famous trails of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, where even more natural beauty awaits you.

#5. Yellowstone Grand Loop

If you’ve ever had dreams of visiting America’s world-renowned Yellowstone National Park, making its Grand Loop an extension of your RV spring road trip is highly recommended. With over 3,000 square miles of mountainous wilderness and lively landscapes, it’s nearly impossible to hike and bike all of Yellowstone in one visit.

But when you opt for a tour through the park’s interconnected loop roads, you get the rare opportunity to witness it all in one go. You can drive 140-miles around the shores of Yellowstone Lake. During your trek, you can expect to see some of the most flattering features of Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Then, you can top off your trip by traversing through the park’s Northern Ridge, where you can skirt wildlife-rich regions like Lamar and Pelican Valleys. In any case, this gorgeous piece of national history is worth adding to your RV bucket list of the best Spring road trip destinations.

#6. The Overseas Highway

If you find yourself RVing on the coast of Florida, traveling through The Overseas Highway might scratch your itch for an adventurous road trip. This incredible highway is 100 miles one way, starting at the Everglades and reaching all the way to Key West on US 1. But its length isn’t what makes this route so distinct.

What truly makes this roadway unique is the series of bridges that connect the limestone and coral archipelago that it arches out of to form the road. As you can imagine, this setup lends visitors fantastic views of the crystal-clear waters that fill the gulf.

Plus, there are a number of charming islands to visit on your way through The Overseas Highways. So you’re guaranteed to find adventure, intrigue, and fun down this particular road.

#7. Bold Coast Scenic Byway

For RV adventurers that want to experience authentic East Coast charm, we suggest planning your Spring trip around the Bold Coast Scenic Highway. This 125-mile stretch of Maine shoreline offers visitors a myriad of tidal marshes, historic shipyards, and maritime forests.

On top of that, you can also make a few stops in renowned fishing villages of the area for seafood that’s unsurpassed in quality and freshness. Of course, there are also a lot of exciting side-quests—like Cadillac Mountain or Acadia National Park—that come with this destination.

Thus, if you’re looking for a variety of exciting adventures with your drive through some of Maine’s most beautiful scenery, Bold Coast Scenic Byway is a must.
