How To Keep Your RV Water Pump Functioning Properly

How To Keep Your RV Water Pump Functioning Properly

The water pump is an integral part of your RV’s plumbing system. If you want flowing, pressurized water without having to rely on a hookup, your water pump needs to stay in good shape. Even if you spend most of your time at full hookup campsites, it’s still important to care for your RV’s water pump. Simply ignoring the pump can lead to major issues when you do eventually need it. That’s why every self-sustaining RV owner should learn how to keep your RV water pump functioning properly. Stay on top of maintenance through every season with these tips.

Annual Inspection and Maintenance

It’s easy to forget about your RV’s water pump when you’re not using it, but you should still take the time to inspect it a few times a year. If you don’t take your RV in for an annual inspection, make sure you check all parts of the vehicle yourself to ensure everything is in good shape. As you look over your water pump, be sure to remove the intake filter and clean off any debris before replacing it. It’s also a good idea to sanitize your entire water system, including the water pump. Doing so will help disinfect the system and prevent the buildup of algae, especially if your RV has been sitting in storage for a while.

Winter Travel

Knowing how to keep your RV water pump functioning properly is important for every season, but it becomes particularly critical during winter travel. If you don’t take care of the water pump—and the rest of the water system—in colder weather, the pipes can freeze, crack, or even burst. Before you set out on your winter adventures, make sure you have everything you need to protect your pump and the overall water system in freezing temperatures. Install heaters on your RV drain pipes, gate valves, and holding tanks to prevent water from freezing throughout the system. Also, insulate and heat the interior and underbelly of your RV to keep the entire vehicle warm and prevent issues in your water pump, pipes, and holding tanks.
